Looking for an up to date answer – my question is similar to this, but I know licensing for power bi has changed since then.
Per this article, “To view the embedded report, you need either a Power BI Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) license. Or, the content needs to be in a workspace that’s in a Power BI Premium capacity (EM or P SKU).”
I’ve taken that as every user of the application the report(s) are embedded in needs to be individually licensed with a Pro or PPU license, OR the organisation needs to purchase a capacity license.
The app we’re looking to embed the report(s) in will have about 200 users, so a lot of money in individual power bi licenses, but not quite as much as a capacity license.
I was talking to a friend yesterday who coincidentally is working on something similar for a different company and he said that he’d got round the cost by creating a service account that the web app runs under, and had a power bi license assigned to it. So that users access the web app, but when they view the reports it’s the service account viewing them, not the end user – so only one individual power bi license required.
Is this right???
Can multiple users with no power bi license access report(s) via a web app using this method??
I personally can’t see Microsoft leaving a loophole like this in their licensing, but my mate sent me a screen grab of what looks like a chat with someone from MS sales confirming that’s the case?
Cheers
