While searching I came across below classification problem with letters “L” and “S”

Below is the feature space. Clearly there is no failure because all 5 samples are classified correctly (red circles = “L” and blue circles = “S”). But i do not know what is y-axis. It says it is mean value for red which is the boundary between two letters. Why the mean is different for letter “s” with 8 corners.
