I am currently in my 3rd year of B.Tech., where I have to do a mini project for Machine Learning Methods course. I have chosen Recommender system as the title and I doubt if it is worth doing it at the current day of technology? If not, what would be your suggestion on the best project ideas to learn and also develop myself for adding them in the resume.

I can see many repos where codes are written but nothing interesting, I would like to hear from you about what are the novelties one can introduce in such projects.
