I am experiencing a persistent issue with a virtual machine (VM) running Ubuntu on a Windows 11 host using VirtualBox. When starting the VM, the screen attempts to resize but then immediately returns to its original size and stays black. This cycle repeats endlessly, rendering the VM unusable.
I can’t reproduce the problem. It appears after a while using the VM after shuting it down and starting it again.
I tried several things already:
testing all display settings available
deleting all files except the .vdi
newest driver installed for Virtual box, tried older ones too, 7.06
checked graphics drivers. newest drivers installed already
disconnecting monitors
increasing disk space
read several forum posts and bug issues
I also reimported my VM which solves the issue and compared the logs. The only different entries i could make out were the VMMdev entries for resizing the display resolution and the missing SetVideoModeHint in the defective VM log. But the error appears again after a while so reimporting is no real solution, besides i lose all content from the VM.
