Good morning everyone, I’m new to this forum. I’m a junior data scientist. In September, I’ll start an internship at a company that deals with energy efficiency in commercial buildings and building management systems. I’ll be the first data scientist to join the office, but honestly, I’m not sure where to start. I had a couple of interviews and here’s more or less what I understood: they have on-site sensors that record various building parameters such as energy consumption, humidity, CO2, and other features, which they upload every 45 minutes to the company dashboard. Their mission is to reduce energy consumption and consequently save money for the client. They have a team of data analysts who perform some basic statistics. They expect me to start implementing advanced statistics (which I can do), to do ML on missing data (I can do that), and some forecasting on prices, and to implement Machine Learning for other types of problems that I can identify. I have some ideas in mind and I’m reading several papers on BMS, but I would like to ask you for some advice on what I could do and if you know where I can find a database to run some simulations. They have given me creative freedom as long as I bring results. Thank you.
I haven’t started the internship yet, so I haven’t tried any specific approaches. However, I have a general plan based on my understanding of their needs and my skills:
Advanced Statistics: I plan to start by analyzing the data collected from the sensors to identify patterns and correlations.
Missing Data Handling: I will use machine learning techniques like KNN, MICE, or deep learning models to handle missing data.
Energy Consumption Forecasting: I aim to develop predictive models using time series analysis and regression techniques to forecast energy consumption and prices.( need help)
Machine Learning Applications: I intend to explore other potential applications of ML in optimizing energy usage and improving building management. ( need help)
I expected to gain clarity on where to begin and practical advice on specific techniques or projects that could be beneficial. I also hoped to find resources or databases for practice. As a result, I’m seeking guidance from the community to refine my approach and ensure I’m on the right track.
